03 FSSAI-CSE ROUNDTABLE

TASTING INDIA SYMPOSIUM: DAY ONE -- MARCH 1, 2017

6:30 P.M. TO 8:00 P.M.: FSSAI-CSE ROUNDTABLE

(Re) Positioning the Indian Diet and Food System in the International Policy Agenda

Food is rapidly becoming a central issue in the global climate change, environmental and health discourse. Presently, unhealthy diets are the leading risk factor for disease worldwide, resulting in rapidly growing rates of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. At the same time, more than 2 billion people remain under-nourished. Of similar concern, food systems contribute nearly a third of global greenhouse gas emissions and agriculture is the single largest driver of ecosystem change and the leading cause of global biodiversity loss and freshwater depletion.

To stand any chance of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Paris Climate Agreement, we need rapidly to fix our broken food system and shift to healthy and sustainable diets. During this roundtable discussion, we will explore how a rediscovery of the traditional Indian diet may be a win-win in helping India achieve health and environmental targets while meeting international policy commitments. We will explore questions such as:

(1) What should we eat to prevent rapid, irreversible climate change and achieve SDG targets?

(2) What is a healthy and sustainable diet?

(3) How can we prevent India from following the current global trends of rapidly rising rates of obesity and non-communicable diseases?

(4) How should we grow food in a socially just and equitable manner?

(5) What is organic food and how do we link small holder agriculturists to markets?

(6) Is it time to re-discover the Indian diet and can we position it as one of the most healthy and sustainable diets of the world?
